Hello bakers, current, prospective and freshers alike! Welcome to the Official Lancaster University Baking Society Blog, with the lowdown on our weekly bakes to our amazing biweekly socials! Before the start of a brand new year of baking, and studying for our degrees in between, here is how our society works so you are all prepped and ready for joining and re-joining Baking Soc come Freshers Fest in October!
Each Saturday of term we bake in Fylde Common Room, offering slots from 10:30 to 1:30 for 8 bakers per slot. The bakes change each week. Some of our past favourites include gingerbread cupcakes, mini egg cookies and vegan lemon Viennese whirls. We also do savoury bakes if that’s your thing and can accommodate to coeliacs for our gluten free bakers as well. Every week we name one of our bakers Star Baker, too, who is rewarded with a free drink on one of the town socials or at our annual Christmas meal (alcoholic or non-alcoholic). Our baking sessions are always a great way to start your weekend because all you do is show up with a tin or Tupperware and bake! Ingredients are provided in the common room and our lovely exec do the washing up, meaning all our members have to do is clean their workstations. As a society we pride ourselves on being inclusive, with our memberships costing just £6 for the year or £3 per term. It then costs £2.50 for a ticket to attend a Saturday bake as this covers the cost of ingredients, and only members can come to bakes. We welcome bakers of any and all levels and abilities- the main aim is to just enjoy yourself!
Baking Society is also about so much more than just baking, too. It’s a great way to meet new friends and wind down from uni work at our biweekly socials. As a taster, last year we had a pottery painting social, Cocktail and Mocktail Night at Tipple (one of Lancaster’s cocktail venues) and our annual Christmas Meal, to name a few! As we have slots on a Saturday, not all our members always cross paths, making our socials the ideal place to come together as a collective.
We can’t wait to meet all you keen and new bakers alike joining Lancaster University this October, so make sure to look out for us at Fresher’s Fest to sign up to our FREE taster bake! You can find us on Instagram and TikTok @lubakingsociety and as ‘Lancaster University Baking Society’ on Facebook.
