Quizzing, Cookies and the Cornerhouse: Latest Baking Soc Scoop!

Hi Bakers, I hope you're all settling into Michaelmas term smoothly and have been enjoying our baking sessions! We have had two fabulous bakes so far with double chocolate muffins and vegan lemon Viennese whirls. Choosing our Star Bakers has been no easy task for our Exec!

Last Thursday we had our first social of the term, a good old-fashioned quiz. Can’t go wrong really, can you? Who doesn’t want to win a Costa voucher to get caffeinated for those dreaded 9ams? We had a fab turn out with lots of you coming along to see how well you really know Prue Leith and iconic film, TV and music video cakes, amongst many other rounds. From Shrek to pineapple upside down cake, there were all kinds of correct answers on Thursday evening! It all came down to a tie breaker question…. How many people apply for the Great British Bake Off each year? I’ll stall a little bit to give you time to think and definitely not check Google. That should be long enough. The answer? 12,000! Don’t know if I like my chances, personally, but we would of course love to see any of our Baking Society members getting a Paul Hollywood handshake! Congratulations to our winners who took the biscuit, well, the Costa voucher, Emily, Jake, Joe and Nori- we hope you’ve enjoyed spending it. Our second and third place bakers also got some star cookie cutters and a box of Heroes for their baking knowledge prowess.

We have some very exciting stuff coming up in the following weeks, too, of course. Our Halloween bake has sold out like hot cakes. Our Exec will be coming in costume so feel free to come and bake as Dracula, Regina George, Barbie, or Ken! Let’s hope the bake gets everyone in the swing of spooky season. I bet your cookies will be BOO-tiful.

Now, speaking of Barbie, our next social is our Big Night Out on Wednesday 1st November, which is in Week 4. The theme is Barbie, and we will be meeting at the Cornerhouse for drinks before heading to Sugar for those who want to. More details will be released soon on our Instagram and members’ Facebook so keep your eyes peeled!
